OUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFER: EMPOWERING STUDENTS FOR LIFE
At Rodborough we want to equip students for life beyond us. We believe that a student's personal growth is just as critical to their future success as academic achievement. Our mission is to explicitly teach, model, and encourage the skills and values that empower our students to not only thrive while they are with us but to leave as confident, responsible citizens, ready to make a positive impact on society.
We want to inspire our students to embrace every opportunity, from their core academic studies to the vibrant, rich, and varied life of the wider school.
This journey is guided and supported by our five core values, which form the bedrock of our school community: Respect, Resilience, Reflection, Resourcefulness, and Responsibility.
We facilitate this journey through a dedicated structure of programmes and activities:
● Our PSHE programme
● Assemblies
● School Council
● Our Careers programme
● Extra-curricular clubs
● Trips – both residential and non-residential
● The Duke of Edinburgh Award
● Student Leadership: Subject Ambassadors and Year 11 Student Leaders
PSHE Programme
Our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education is fundamental. Every student takes part in a dedicated, tutor-led lesson each Wednesday, providing a space for consistent, essential learning.
Assemblies
Our assemblies are a cornerstone of our community. Mapped across the academic year, they bring students and staff together to celebrate success, reinforce our shared values, and foster a strong sense of school spirit. The programme alternates between focused year group sessions and wider Lower or Upper School gatherings. These are vital opportunities to consider and reflect on key themes, ideas, and events.
School Council and Student Leadership
We believe in the power of student voice. Our School Council members are democratically elected, with a representative from every tutor group across all five year groups. This council serves as a crucial platform to represent the views and ideas of the entire student body. For our Year 7 students, this is a fantastic first step into leadership. As students progress, new opportunities emerge. Year 10 students can apply to become Subject Ambassadors, and Year 11 offers a full range of Student Leader roles, including our Senior Team of Lead Students.
Careers Programme
Our robust Careers programme is designed to meet the rigorous Gatsby benchmarks. Dedicated careers lessons are integrated into the PSHE curriculum, and students have full access to the Unifrog library to explore different professions. Building real-world connections is key, which is why we incorporate meaningful employer interactions for students from Years 7 through 10. Year 10 students also undertake a vital week of work experience during the summer term. We ensure students are well-informed about the variety of post-16 pathways, hosting external speakers to provide first-hand insights and advice.
Co-Curricular Provision, Clubs, and Trips
We are exceptionally proud of our co-curricular offer. We encourage all students to find their passion through a wide range of extra-curricular clubs—including sporting, drama, art, and music—all available during lunchtimes and after school. We also believe that learning should extend beyond the classroom. We organise a diverse range of trips—both residential and non-residential—providing unforgettable opportunities to explore the wider world. We provide full support to encourage maximum participation for all students.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award
Rodborough is a proud and long-standing provider of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award. This has always been a profoundly popular programme with our students. The journey begins in Year 10 with the Bronze Award challenges. Students who feel inspired by this experience can choose to continue in Year 11, working towards their Silver Award, building skills, resilience, and a legacy that they carry with them into their post-16 future.
