Heritage Languages

An exam centre we are able to offer those children who speak an additional language to English, the opportunity to complete a GCSE in their home language, also known as Heritage Language.  This service is offered free of charge.

This opportunity is offered to all children who are proficient in their home language in all four elements of studying a language (e.g. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing).  We usually advise that children complete their home language GCSE in Year 10 as by that age, they have the academic experience to allow them to achieve the highest possible grade.

For your child to have the opportunity to be entered in a Heritage Language GCSE this academic year (or in future academic years), please can we ask you to complete the following short form.

Currently, the following Languages are offered at GCSE:

AQA	Pearson Edexcel
Italian Polish Bengali Urdu Hebrew Mandarin/Cantonese Panjabi	Spanish Russian Arabic Greek Japanese Portuguese Gujarati Persian Turkish

Once we have received the request, you will be contacted with further details regarding the process for entry.  The decision whether to enter will be based on responses received in the survey and the availability of a GCSE in the particular Heritage Language. 

Although we are not able to offer any support (e.g. tutoring) with regards to developing any aspect of your child’s proficiency in their home language, we will be able to advise on how best to help your child prepare for their GCSE.   We expect students to prepare for this additional GCSE independently, drawing on the support of  parents/carers/external professionals.
